Help!! I’ve just kicked over the paint can and need to know how to clean up paint spills! Has this ever happened to you? Spilling paint can be a very stressful and messy mistake. However there are ways to deal with this disaster without losing your mind.

When it comes to how to clean up paint spills, the best bet is to avoid them in the first place. Make sure to always set your paint can out of the line of traffic and if not in use, put the lid on! Further, cover everything with drop cloths. This way if an accident does happen, it will be on the drop cloth and not on your new carpet! And last, make sure to have a drywall taping knife or large putty knife, clean rags, a wet/dry vac, and paper towels handy every time you paint.
If you do end up spilling some paint, here are some valuable tips from a professional painter.
First, immediately scoop as much paint as you can off the surface using the taping/putty knife. This large, flat blade will help get the most paint up quickly. Once the paint has spilled, it has been contaminated and you’ll want to throw it away.
Next use clean rags to wipe the surface. Make sure to flip and rotate the rag to a clean spot with each swipe. If you don’t rotate and flip, you’ll only be smearing and driving the paint down farther. The next steps are dictated by the surface the paint was spilled on. Read below to find out the process for carpet, sealed wood, tile, vinyl/linoleum, or concrete.
Carpet
The question of how to clean up paint spills on carpet is a little tricky. After scooping up the majority of paint with a putty/taping knife, wipe up what’s left with clean rags. Then, move on to the wet/dry vac. You can spray a light cleaning solution of ½ tsp of Dawn dish soap and 1 cup warm water on to the stain. Or, you can just try some warm water which sometimes works on its own.
Once you’ve sprayed the solution or warm water from a spray bottle onto the stain, vacuum up the area with the wet/dry vac. Repeat this process until the paint is gone. Once clean, use a clean dry towel (one you don’t mind ruining) and absorb as much moisture from the carpet as possible.
Sealed Wood
Most hardwood floors are treated with a sealant of some type. This sealant allows for fairly easy wet paint removal. How to clean up paint spills on sealed wood is simple. After getting the majority of the paint up using clean rags or paper towels, just clean with a wet sponge or mop.
Tile
When asked how to clean up paint spills on tile, our answer is two fold. The main concern with tile is the grout, not necessarily the tile. You’ll want to work quickly to sop up the wet paint spilled on tile to prevent it from spilling into the grout lines.
If the paint does flow into the grout lines, make sure not to wipe or scrub at the wet paint. This motion could embed the pigment into the grout making it impossible to remove. Instead sop up as much paint as you can using clean rags. Then use an old soft toothbrush and warm, soapy water to scrub the grout. Rinse and repeat as many times as necessary to remove the paint.
Vinyl/Linoleum
A vinyl or linoleum surface is the easiest when it comes to how to clean up paint spills. Vinyl and linoleum flooring is typically sealed with a protective coat. This allows you to simply wipe up your spill with paper towels or rags, then mop.

Concrete
Concrete is another surface that can be fairly simple to clean paint spills from. As with all the other surfaces, clean as much paint from the surface as possible with a large putty knife, rags and paper towels. Then scrub with a brush and rinse with warm water. Using a hose or pressure washer can help with this process as well if the concrete is in a garage or outside.
All in all, once you learn how to clean up paint spills you discover it’s really not the end of the world if it happens. It’s a huge pain in the neck but usually fixable!
