There are many paints on the market today. Each type of paint has its own job to do and its own attributes. One of those paints is often referred to as DTM or Direct to Metal paint. DTM paint is just as its name implies, applied directly to metal.

A Direct to Metal paint does not require a primer and may be applied with minimal surface prep. The DTM paint acts both as a primer and top coat in one. It’s best to speak to your professional painter to determine when to use Direct to Metal paint.
Direct to Metal paint is a protective coating and comes in different categories. It is sold in both oil-based and water-based formulas. They are both good for interior or exterior applications. Further, DTM paint can be specially formulated for extreme heat applications.
Oil-Based Direct To Metal Paint
Oil-based Direct to Metal paint can be used on outdoor metal surfaces. It’s typically used on items like tables, metal fences, and patio chairs. However, oil-based DTM paints have high VOCs and emit strong odors that can be an irritant and are not environmentally friendly. Additionally, oil-based DTM can fade faster than a water-based Direct to Metal paint.

It’s good to know which kind and when to use Direct to Metal paint before starting your project. Along with oil-based, DTM is available in a water-based formula.
Water-Based Direct To Metal Paint
Water-based Direct to Metal paints have lower VOCs and are environmentally friendly. The water-based DTM paints are also very durable and fast drying. The DTM coating protects against weathering, rust, and corrosion. Due to their low VOC’s, water-based Direct to Metal paints can also be used in interior applications.
Specialty Metal Paints
There are a few specialty Direct to Metal paints available on the market as well. One of the most commonly used is a High Heat metal paint. These metal paints are specially formulated to withstand the heat of BBQ grills, fireplace trim, fireplace screens and wood burning stoves.

Once you’ve determined the scope of your painting project, you’ll want to do your research on paint. It’s important to understand when to use a regular paint vs when to use Direct to Metal paint. Painting a metal substrate is more challenging because not all coatings are compatible with metal. Metal substrates are also prone to corrosion, oxidization, and rust. Knowing when to use Direct to Metal paint is key!
