SEM: PPC and CPC Internet Marketing
Search engine marketing (SEM) is a method of Internet marketing that is achieved through paid advertising that drives traffic and thus potential customers to an advertiser’s website. Google is a market leader in offering SEM through their Adwords program. This is also known as PPC (Pay-per-click) or CPC (Cost-per-click) advertising, as the search engine (i.e Google) that hosts the respective ad, receives revenue for each click that drives traffic to the advertiser’s website. Yahoo, Bing and others also offer PPC advertising solutions, but their market share is minimal compared to Google.
SEM can be an effective marketing tool if the conditions are right. Determining if the conditions are right involves analysis to determine if the cost of advertising will provide quality return on investment (ROI). Advertiser’s Ad position on the SERP (search engine results page) is determined by a bidding process. The highest bidder gets the top position, and the next highest bidder gets the second position and so on. It is also important that SEM is implemented correctly to maximize effectiveness and ROI.
